I Am Worth It

There is a cost for everything you do in life. Sometimes it is worth the payment we make, at other times we have simply wasted our precious time and money.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said: “For everything you have missed, you have gained something else; and for everything you gain, you lose something else.”

It is very important to understand the priorities you have in your life. Are you willing to give up something in order to gain something else?

If you want to build a business, what are you willing to give up in order to devote time to this endeavor? If you want to spend more time with your loved ones, where will you cut back? What about a hobby, a lifestyle, an experience?

More importantly, determine whether what you are aiming for is important to you, and if it is, understand that you are worth the time and the sacrifices it will cost to make it happen.

First of all, prioritize your life. What are the five things that are most important to you right now? Not what you are doing right now, but the things you would do and take time for if you have a choice. Is it spending more time with the family? If this is the case, what do you need to spend less time doing in order to create this time? Is it building or growing a business or your career? Whatever your priorities are, they will not grow unless your put time and effort into them.

We all have the same minutes, and hours in the day. We are all busy, all have commitments, pressures and expectations. The difference is what we choose to do with those minutes and hours in our day. We all have a choice, whether we say we have or not. It is time to place a value on what you spend your time doing.

Make sure the price you are paying for your decisions are worth it.

Great post! We are revisiting what is most important to us now. Job uncertainty, a new family member and many other life changes mean our goal and priorities have changed but I have a feeling we aren’t 100% solid about what exactly they are. Might need to blog about this!

Thanks Talina. I agree – sounds like a good new blog post to me. I know in my own life my priorities and goals have changed as our life circumstances have changed.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this site. I appreciate it greatly.

Emerson sure said a lot of great things. 🙂 Thanks for that quote.

I like that you chose the number five for figuring out your top priorities in life. Any more than that, and things get iffy.

This is why it’s so important to make money doing something you love that really reflects who you are. That way, you can take care of several priorities at the same time. For many people, the job is a have-to that just sucks up time they’d rather spend on things that really matter to them.

    • Thank you for your comments Sue. I chose five priorities as I found that when I first started making big changes in my life, I tried to do it all at once. Looked good on paper, but the reality for me was it was just too much to focus on.

From my huge list, I took the top 5, and concentrated on those. It wasn’t long before these were where I wanted them to be, and I added some more.

I think we have all worked in jobs through necessity. When I did this, I made sure I focused on why I was working – the benefits to me and my family, rather than that I was doing something I didn’t particularly enjoy. It got me to where I wanted to be 🙂
