What does The Law of Attraction Mean to You?

“Law of Attraction” What do these words mean to you?

The Secret? Vibration? Magnetism? Thinking about what you want and leaving it to the Universe to deliver? Over-commercialized hype? I have heard it all – people believing that this is all there is to manifesting and those who believe that it is rubbish. Where do you sit on this topic?

To answer this question, here are my thoughts. How many of you have turned on a radio to a particular station? You turn on the switch and the station you have “tuned into” is heard across the speakers. A song comes on that you don’t particularly like – so you turn the dial to the right and suddenly another radio station is heard. Have you ever thought about how this is possible? When you turn on the radio – you hear the music or discussions that are on a particular frequency. You tune into the frequency that the radio station is relayed from.

Attracting what you want in your life is no different. By turning ourselves to the frequency of what we desire – we tune into that “station” and attract those frequencies to us. Be aware though, that attracting things into our life that we do not want is just as easy. It depends upon our focus. If you are tuned into negativity and focusing on what you do not want in your life – guess what……..this is what will be attracted to you.

Understand that this is not the same as “wishing” for things. People wish for things all the time. “I wish I had……” “I wish I was…….” “I wish…..” “I wish….” “I wish…….”  The difference between wishing and attraction is there is no energy with wishes. Energy works like a magnet and can attract or repel the outcomes to you. Most people wish for things, which  they never expect nor make any effort to obtain. “I want a new job, I want a new partner, I want a fit body.”  Wishing for these things will not occur without energy and action from you. Sounds good, but how do you do it?

The Law of Attraction states: I attract to myself, whatever I give my focus, attention, or energy to; whether wanted or unwanted. If you think about being broke, poor, lonely and believe your thoughts…….. guess what? That is exactly what you’ll be. This Law works when you want it to and when you don’t want it to.

Earl Nightingale said “As you move towards your goal, it moves towards you.”

Sitting on your couch and wishing for your life to change will not get you your desired outcomes if you are focusing on the areas in your life that you no longer want. Remember your thoughts have a frequency and you will attract to you what you are attuned to. Whatever we focus on, whatever we expect and think about, will tend to  bring into our lives the things and conditions that are in harmony with those thoughts. You have all heard the sayings “birds of a feather flock together” “if you want to soar with the eagles don’t fly with the turkeys” “like attracts like” Thoughts and actions of people attract and draw to them people of their own type and kind.

We create our own reality. We attract those things in our life (money, relationships, employment) that we focus on. When we focus on “having less” then we create that experience for ourselves. When we focus on “I hate my life” then we will never notice the aspects of our existence that may be satisfying. Wanting something isn’t going to bring our desires when we continue to obsess about not having that something. All we will experience is “not having” and will be ultimately blocking our true desires.

How do I use the Law of Attraction” to manifest the things I want in my life?

  1. Always remember that we operate like radio stations—broadcasting and receiving dependent upon our thoughts.
  2. To attract what we want in our lives ask yourself the question “what is it that I want? (Remember – not what you don’t want but what is the the outcome you will achieve)
  3. Be aware of the things you are currently interested in or the things you are currently spending your time doing. We may be so interested in things that are  not prosperous, happy and healthy that we pass by the very things we desire most. With our interests so focused in  seeing the lesser, either through habit or ignorance, we fail to attract the greater things that are all around us.
  4. What are you spending time doing?  Where our attention is focused will be what is continued to be attracted to our lives. When we direct our attention, this magnetizes our power of attraction which draws to us much of the same type as our thoughts. Where our attention is focused  that is what is drawn to us – whether success or failure.
  5. Attention with intensity. Expectation that what we are focusing on will manifest. “I will attract my ideal partner”……….but am I good enough – he would probably want someone more attractive than me” will not achieve your desired outcomes. Your expectation will intensify your interest and attention. If you want one thing but doubt that you will receive it – you frequency is diffused and you will attract those lesser thoughts.

This is my understanding of the Law of Attraction. Even though this is a topic which has been spoken about and written about so much in recent years and there is so much more that can be covered in this topic, I still believe there is some confusion and disbelief in this  subject. I would be interested in your thoughts.

This was great. I was one of those people who wished and hoped that things would change while sitting on my couch. As this post highlights – action is what is also needed. Good info

    • Brenda Freeman says:

I think when The Secret first came out that the message was that we only needed to think our way to success. While our thoughts are extremely important – we must also take action on those thoughts. The Secret was very successful in making people aware of this age old topic

  2. Rachel says:

I was a little bit confused with what the Law of Attraction meant. Have read the Secret and it seemed so simple, but now realise there is so much more

    • Brenda Freeman says:

There still remains a great deal of confusion about this subject. What The Secret did was bring to the attention of the world this particular Law. It was not something new, but it marketed an old idea into a new one extremely well.

  3. Katybeth says:

Joe introduced me to the law of attraction before he became dearly departed Joe. It resonated immediately. There is a line on one of the tapes about a cookie–“it’s just a little cookie” and swimming downstream that always makes Cole and I laugh and it’s instant trigger for us to find something, anything, in a dismal moment to redirect us back towards what we do want. Cole will look at me and say….”It’s just a little cookie.” or vice versa. When people bring up that you have to work for you want–WORK HARD–I tell them that nothing is harder than work than keeping your focus on what you want and not what you don’t want. 🙂
Your post explains the concept brilliantly…

    • Brenda says:

      Thank you Katy.

I agree – keeping your focus on what you want rather than the things that you don’t want is definitely the key.

Those everyday actions create the opportunities

  4. rob white says:

Well said Brenda. You offer sound, pragmatic guidance on the “Law of Attraction.” The Secret did a great diservice to a lot folks by focusing solely on the “thinking” and not giving the “doing” equal merit. We experience life in two worlds – an inner world of imaginings and emotions and an outer world of conditions and circumstances. Although these two worlds are distinguishable, they are utterly inseparable.

    • Brenda says:

Thank you Rob – I appreciate you comments on this subject – especially our inner and outer worlds which are inseparable – something that is often overlooked

  5. Wendy says:

This made a lot of sense to me – my husband got sick of me talking about the Law of Attraction – so I showed him your article – he got it 🙂

    • Brenda Freeman says:

Wendy – am happy that my writing made sense to your husband. Sometimes we just need to hear or see things in a different way for it to click. Happy to help and thank you for sharing.

  6. Cassandra says:

Great explanation on an extremely complex topic. Thank you

  7. Brian says:

Not too sure about This stuff….I sort of think things just happen – not sure that I attract things to me

    • Brenda says:

Thanks for your comments Brian – the Law of Attraction is not something new but each of us can determine for themselves whether they believe it is relevant to them.

However I believe that my thoughts are energy and therefore I do attract things to my life.

  8. Evelyn says:

Very informative post, thank you for sharing this with us! The Law id=f Attraction is such a complex area – made simple by this post.

  9. Carol says:

Thank you – enjoyed reading this a lot

  10. Ari says:

I adore your blog! Especially enjoyed this post – it makes a great deal of sense – action makes the difference.

  11. Kadee says:

I read “The Secret” & I don’t believe in the Law of Attraction. I think, for example, that plenty of people who think healthy thoughts still get terminal cancer. I don’t think I had to start wearing eyeglasses because I was thinking of developing poor vision–I was a normal kid who never thought about glasses until I couldn’t read the writing on the blackboard. I also don’t think that I brought a great boyfriend into my life by thinking positive thoughts about relationships or expecting one to develop–it just happened when I met the right person. I think you could send up a planeload of people are who individually terrified of flying, all of whom are certain that plane is going to crash–and see it land safely.

I do think that concentrating on the things we desire can make us more alert to opportunities when they appear. For example, thinking frequently about the career you want will mean you’re more likely to read relevant articles, mention it to friends, find out about second-level contacts who work in that field, etc. But that’s not magic and it doesn’t indicate the existence of a natural law.

I also think that positive thoughts can make you happier and more pleasant to be around, and that this can have a good snowball effect on your life as a whole.

Finally, I think that as literate citizens of the developed world, we all have enormous resources available to us which most people (certainly me) don’t make an effort to fully employ. If you want to become superfit or very wealthy or very confident, whatever your goal is–if that’s what you focus on, and if you truly devote most of your time, thoughts, and energy to that goal–you really can do it. (Assuming, of course, that by “superfit” we don’t mean regrowing your legs if you’re an amputee, etc.) But again, there’s no magic in this. It’s just taking massive focused action, which most people don’t do.

I appreciate your asking for my thoughts & I’m happy to read yours, as well.

    • Brenda says:

I think on the whole we are saying very similar things Kadee. especially your thoughts about action – agree 100% there.

With the plane metaphor – the actual flight and navigation is out of the passengers control – I would be more concerned if the pilot felt that way. 🙂

Seriously though -thank you for you in-depth reply – I don’t write Mind Recipes for people to agree 100% with me and as I am a strong believer in lifelong learning – I continue to grow and learn from comments such as yours also.

It sounds like you have some good things happening in your life – continue to enjoy your journey. Please come back and visit again soon

    • Lisa Holderness says:

Kadee, I think what the law of attraction means, is that what you think about most will happen. If your focus is health and wellness for example then you will create a life which is centered around health and wellness. You may join a gym, seek out natural cures and remedies for ailments, eat a certain diet etc.. and surround yourself with people who share the same interests, therefore lowering your chances for terminal cancer. Things don’t happen instantly either with the law of attraction explaining your plane crashing theory. It is simply that what you think most about will happen in your life. Whatever is important to you, you will find a way to obtain. Whatever dominates your mind each day will make your life into what it is. If God is your focus than you will learn to live your life in a Godly way. What you choose will happen. Maybe being in a healthy, positive relationship is a must for you and that is why your boyfriend came into your life, because he met your expectations. The mind is a powerful thing.

  12. Roy says:

A most misunderstood principle – like what you have written

  13. Johan says:

    Hi Brenda!
I love your post! I agree with what you said but it’s maybe not so easy to get or to see the results as changing the tuned radio station… we need to be aware of what we can change in our life.
To me, there is no one reality, each one creates its own reality based upon the way he looks at the world, the life.
You can’t change the basic rules of the world you live in (you might not cure from a cancer) but changing the way you look at it and the way you behave in it you can make your reality a better your world.
An easy example is the smile, try to smile to people you don’t even know (walking in the street) and you will get a smile back!
Well, said like this it seems a bit too mathematical… and it’s not, like said kadee “concentrating on the things we desire can make us more alert to opportunities when they appear.”
Give trust, love and respect and you’ll be more receptive when someone gives you trust, love and respect.

    Thanks for sharing 😉
    Johan

    • Brenda says:

Thank you for your wonderful insight Johan.

Absolutely agree with you that there is no one reality – we see what we search for.

As with all my posts on this page, they are just my take on a topic as I see it – I love to read other people’s view points as I believe in life long learning – always learning – always growing.

Thanks again for sharing and welcome to Mind Recipes 🙂

thank you sooo much for ur time<3

    • Brenda says:

      Mariah

I am pleased for you that everything is going well for you now.

Life can be like this a lot though – there can be times where everything seems to be going well, and there will be times when it seems they are not. We all experience this – the trick is no matter what happens, to always look for the sunshine and not the clouds.

As far as your horse is concerned – I cannot say whether it is on the way or not. However, your story really related to me. When I was 14, I also had a burning desire to own a horse, but my parents couldn’t afford it either. To cut a long story short, I met a lady who bred horses and she needed people to ride, exercise and love her stable. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to “own” my horse without having to pay anything except my time, which I loved to do. For 2 years.
The Law of Attraction works – not always the way you expect, but I am a strong believer that we also need to take action and be ready for the opportunities as they come.

Let me know how you go.

      Kind regards Brenda 🙂
