How Can I Meditate?

Meditation can bring to mind all types of images – sitting cross-legged on top of a mountain, endless chanting, and extreme discipline. However, I believe that meditation can mean something different to everyone. My favorite simplest definition of meditation is “relaxing the body and calming the mind”.

Therefore I don’t have hard and fast rules about the way you need to sit or lie down. The most important thing is to relax your body and calm the mind. The simplest ways to do this are:

  • Concentrate on your breathe. Listen to the sound of your breathing and imagine the life force entering and cleansing every cell of your body.
  • In addition, you may imagine a beautiful white light entering your cells on each breathe.
  • When thoughts enter your head (and they will – did I turn the iron off, I wonder if it will be fine tomorrow for golf or any number of other irrelevant thoughts), simply acknowledge these thoughts and let them pass by. Once they have passed, go back to concentrating on your breathe.

There are so many different methods out there, but my most important message is: “Don’t try meditation once and give up, because it didn’t work”.

Meditation is like many things in life, and you may need to experiment and find out what works for you. You only get good at a skill by practicing it regularly, and meditation is no different.
